I use both mailbox.org and migadu.com

As you mention custom domains, Migadu might be better for you. You can manage multiple domains and an almost infinite number of aliases.

It’s a very “straight to the point” tool, but it works really well and I like that they focus on one thing and do it well.

Mailbox.org is good too but more of a traditional email provider
