For me, my dislike of her comes much more from the attitude she gives off.

Outside of her interactions with Data, she’s brusque, domineering and frankly unprofessional.

Her attitude towards Data is bigotry pure and simple (and the kind of bigotry we’d not expect of a senior medical officer serving on Starfleet; and was largely settled in Measure of a Man… but we won’t talk about that episode, its an entirely different rant.)

Lets just put it this way. If any of my employees said the same kinda shit about another of my employees, they’d be terminated at my earliest convenience. If they did that to one of their superiors? (remember, Data was the second officer. In terms of shipwide command it went Picard->Ryker->Data.)

More to the point, she was constantly manipulating him into shitty little games goading him into proving his capabilities as a person. Like in the Moriarty episode, and in the episode with the strategema guy. (the battle simulation with ryker and a small contingent posing as a disadvantaged opposition,)

To be fair a lot of the problems with the character stem more from the fact they wanted a heel than from anything else. she didn’t grow into something tolerable because they didn’t want a character that grew into something tolerable.

So she was McCoy, who was every bit as brusque, domineering, and frequently racist toward Spock.

Funny no one complains about that.

      I wonder why…

If there’s anything to complain about, it’s that her relationship with Data and McCoy’s with Spock were so obviously intended to be parallels that it just felt kinda lazy.

I think it also hurt that the first Pulaski episode has her arguing fiercely and repeatedly with Picard, and then turning out to be so catastrophically wrong that everyone on the ship would’ve died if Picard hadn’t held firm. That’s Unnatural Selection, episode 7 of the season. Early enough to inform early impressions of the character.

        yup. Brusque. Domineering. Unprofessional.

one of the things that cracked me up, though, was that they could re-materialize the “kid” in stasis with that vacuformed stuff on top of him but couldn’t, like, selectively not transport a space suit or other hazmat suit. (I.e. beam the person over, re-materialize the suit first, then the person. then when they’re coming back, you beam the two over but leave the suit de-materialized and just replicate a new one.)

They absolutely could have safely sent bodies over if what we saw on the episode was ‘safe enough’.

(as a side note, why did they have to expose anyone at all to see? A petri dish with something that looks vaguely like human cells would have been enough. we’ve been doing that ourselves for ages.)

Oh, absolutely. I feel it’s one of the biggest missed opportunities in TNG.

I will say, however, that I always viewed her getting Data to play the stratagema dude was something of a turning point. At the end she’s very much on team Data.

I also thought it was refreshing to see someone very imperfect and needing to work in their attitude in the series.

Usually it’s Troys mum that they just let slide (or hide from), or is someone already refined.

This was one of the first proper human characters in the show that had something they could work on, and could grow into being a proper crew member.
