Great Gig in the Sky has some of the most emotional singing I have heard in any music. And I’m someone who generally doesn’t like when singers over-vocalize and show off in songs. It just seems stupid and pointless on run-of-the-mill songs, but in Dark Side of The Moon and this track especially it seems very appropriate to me, someone has literally died and ascended is how I understand the track.
Also this particular performance by Claire Torry is what sells it for me, I’ve heard live versions where it just doesn’t sound so incredibly moving as the album track does.
Of course, it’s all down to personal preference.
