4·4 days agoExactly my story. Putting stuff into and getting it back out of Linkwarden was way too cumbersome, even with the FF addon installed. I want to just Control + D/B to throw something inside / get something out of my bookmarks. Linmwarden’s preservation of content is nice and all, but I found I rarely if ever needed that functionality.

1·6 days agoAdmittedly, Nexcloud does try to be the everything app, and for several of those things, it naturally loses out to more specialised applications (e.g. photos vs. immich). Contacts and calendars, however, are such a no-brainers (particularly when run through card/calDAV, not the web apps) that I don’t see why I’d set up yet another service just for that.
Feel free to sell Baikal to me a little more, though! ;)

5·7 days agoIt depends what you want from this.
- LocalSend shines with single files that you specifically select.
- Syncthing is great for zero-hassle synchronisation of multiple files and even entire folders.
Personally, I prefer the latter because it’s much more powerful. Also, I’ve experienced issues with LocalSend and VPN usage.

141·7 days agoExcellent advice!
I’d like to add to the list:
- Calendar, Contacts - Nextcloud (via cal/cardDAV)
- Bookmark (and tab?) sync via Firefox Sync (or similar)
- AirDrop to Syncthing
- Check whatever other software and features she uses daily for work, communication, or leisure, and make sure it either exists on the Linux side or there’s a viable alternative, and get her used to that first
I’d only make the switch once you’ve made sure that
- she knows why she’s doing this, and is determined to. Doing it because you made her is bound to lead to failure.
- you know all the features and software she’s used to and have tested and established a working alternative.

0·11 days agoWhy would you want to expose it to the web in the first place? In a homelab scenario, you’re the only one who needs access, so putting it behind a VPN comes at zero convenience or monetary cost.

Amazing! TYSM for the detailed instructions! I’ve got a reverse proxy and a domain in place, so this should be no problem.
