  • I think it’s absurd the argument gets made that rich people aren’t rich because their assets aren’t real like cash, meanwhile they leverage those assets into loans that are absolutley real and tax-free.

The value is real. The absurdity needs to stop. You can’t say “tax the rich” out of one side of your mouth and then turn around and say “their wealth isn’t real” out of the other. This manipulation of terminolgy to obfuscate how wealth and assets work is pushed by the wealthy themselves to avoid anything that might increase their chances of being taxed. Seriously, if they came out and said “I’m rich as fuck thanks to my assets that I leverage into tax free loans!” How long do you think they’d last? Instead we argue over how “real” things are and say things like “The rich don’t actually have a lot of money…”

  • Lemmy already has all the issues that Big Social Media has except the profit and monetization drive expectation by a commercial management team. Bad mods, bots, whatever. The difference is that we’re still small enough via instances that it is possible to segregate truly problematic instances or users by other users or instance operators. So in that way we have an advantage, and IMO unless there are some dramatic changes in how the fediverse operates I think it makes it unattractive to the people seeking to commercialize and/or manipulate Social Media. While it’s not impossible for those changes, it’s just unlikely.

  • ITT: people trash talking potential customers rather than being outraged at surge/convenience pricing that is going to start invading more and more things.

It doesn’t fucking matter if people don’t like Starbucks or they victim-blame because they didn’t make coffee at home. Pricing to charge customers more based on whatever temporary metric is going to reach into everyone’s wallet sooner than you think. Grocery stores are already contemplating this. It’s been a thing for everything from Uber rides to airline or concert tickets for a while now.
