Oh that’s an angle I never thought of – protection via thicker wires designed to trip but not to heat. Very clever!

That’s a lot!

oh, very interesting – for the clock radio example, wouldn’t the radio fry the circuit board before it tripped the breaker?

Oh right, thanks for that. So fuses in the outlet are pretty typical in the US?

oh wow. So when a device shorts out, it can do some real damage…

It’s about the current though no?
UK we have 32A / 6A (e.g. lighting) circuit breakers, but our individual devices are fused at the plug at 1A / 3A / 6A depending on load. A single house has maybe 10 fuses max at the consumer unit.
US they have more circuit breakers, with breakers at 3A / 6A (?) without any fuses on their device plugs, so they have to routinely change the the tiny circuit breaker at the consumer unit, but because of this limitation, they typically have double the number of circuit breakers at the unit ?
In the above example, the short circuit would still happen through the plug and not before it, so in the UK we would just chuck the plug fuse
(Asking, because I genuinely don’t know)
oh man I wish. I have a “tesco express” here, which means everything’s packaged smaller and double the price of a normal tesco
I have a friend who says words to the same!
I went to Bletchley Park recently, and they have a single room full of these where they would intercept codes from the Germans, write them down, file them away, someone else would come in, triage the 100s of new messages, take the most promising in a van and drive it off for it to get decoded.
An endless operation, apparently cars were constantly coming and going just to decode these messages
Your brain might say its tired, but its not.
Have you ever been in a boring conversation and couldn’t stop yawning, but then it shifted to something interesting and then very suddenly you’re wide awake?
Or you stumble upon a boring wikipedia article but soon realise you’re reading the whole thing and unable to put it down?
Interest! It exists, it’s out there waiting to catch you via the right hobby

Day went well. Learned more about boilers than I wanted to, but humming along nice
Typical conservative mindset:

“Why?”

I will never not read that as an Evanescence lyric
“Call the dark, and save me
from my name.”
It’s a haiku relating to the famous court case between Mr S Nakes and Mr N Ot, as represented by his lawyer Oscar Zamebdis (common misspelling) who liberated Mr Nakes from participating in a reading test due to his sunburn.
The watermark of circles in the background reference how much he won in the settlement

The second floor lines up weirdly – I think the fireplace lines up with the upstairs sitting room, though that defintely does not excuse the mezzanine just floating there close to the flames
yeah! Like I just got a severe anal probing aboard a UFO, was terrified and subdued the entire time, but then afterwards they put me back into bed, and I feel a great sense of physical wellness.
I’d tell others about it, and they’d pshaw me and say either UFO’s dont exist, or if they do exist, they don’t care about us
I’ve seen a 16A fuse on a power cable for a 1000W PSU. I don’t know the fuse for my kettle, but do know it runs off a 20A circuit breaker, so that’s it’s upper bound likely
