On a related note, as a parent I think school perfect attendance awards are perverse. Congratulations, we’re rewarding a kid for being a disease vector and being sent to school miserable and snotty, or at best making other kids feel less-than because they received proper treatment and isolation. I would guess that the average perfect attendance kids costs the rest of the school at least half a dozen absences per year.
If I’m the Democrats, I try to figure out a way to get something of value to the American people in exchange for letting him fuck off to play with his toys for the next two years. Whatever it is would be cheaply bought, especially if it distracts him from doing anything of actual importance, which by this point we know will be stupid and bad.
But I think the whole notion is poisoned for a good while.
Yeah, nobody’s going to want to throw good money after bad to tear it down again. Maybe at some point after Trump dies and therefore can’t gloat, it’ll actually get used for state dinners and such. In the meantime, I personally think you’ll see the space partitioned into cube farms and temporary offices, and in particular you’ll see the First Lady (or Gentleman) and staff plopped back down over there.
One of these days I’m gonna have to read the whole thing myself, but in the first few pages the ST:TMP novelization, Roddenberry himself sort of implies that Starfleet is full of deeply conservative throwbacks who have a weird combination of wanderlust and tolerance for authority that life on post-scarcity Earth cannot satisfy, and that both they and the Earthbound population are happier with Starfleet personnel being off-planet.
It strikes me as a hand-wavey way to justify to himself how he can have a free-love, no-money utopian society, yet all the media he could manage to get made is basically showing us a combination of NASA and the US Navy, with a pretty marked tendency towards the latter. For Gene, any 23rd-century people whom 20th-century minds could even comprehend would have to be psychological Luddites.

It wasn’t. IIRC, it was descending at 30,000 feet per minute at its peak and was maybe coming close to Mach 1 at impact.

I always assumed it was some fantastical product that operated like powdered milk, but reconstituted into toast. I never watched that much R&S though. I found the grotesque style (in both the classical and everyday senses) to be offputting. I was still watching cartoons in Junior High – hell, I still watch good ones now – but I was more a Tiny Toon Adventures/Animaniacs guy.
