Hello all!
I sometimes see (short) videos successfully posted on lemmy, and the ActivityPub protocol should support posting audio, can you post mp3s?
If so, how? If not why?
PS. American friends, Get out and vote!
Make a issue on lemmy/piefed repos? Good idea though.
I have no idea where that would be, but I’ll be looking around (have a stomach bug ATM so my energy levels are too low to do anything important).
I was complaining about the same last week. Want to post a picture or a a video? Everyone has a button for those. Want to post an audio clip? Get out of here ya freak! Go somewhere else and maybe come back with a link.
should let you comment an embedded mp3. If you want to share any link, you can post it as a post, I guess.
Thanks but I want to post an mp3, not a link!
But that’s the way to do it. That’s how all media on Lemmy works. You upload the media somewhere and then link to it. Then it’s up to the clients to interpret that.
That most Lemmy servers integrate an upload service to host images and sometimes videos is just convenience and not necessarily part of the service. In the end the presentation is the same, a link to a file.
So I guess you could make a feature request to Lemmy and maybe Piefed to allow uploading mp3 files. And for the default web client to present a player for that file.
But as long as you have somewhere to upload your mp3 file to you should be able to post it right now.

If you mean specifically as the target of a post, you can post a link to whatever you want (well, at least an http/https link…I don’t think that all protocols are supported, though I haven’t checked).
However, I don’t believe that the img-rs instance that Lemmy instances normally run to allow hosting images will accept mp3s. So you’d have to upload it elsewhere (catbox.moe or something like that) that can accept mp3s and then link to it.
checks
At least on lemmy.today, yeah, it doesn’t accept it.
The only format that I know that supports audio that img-rs will accept is WebM, and only if it has a video component.
Combining an image and mp3 audio file into a WebM:
$ ffmpeg -i denver-international-airport-blue-mustang-statue-blucifer-1600x1067.jpg -i 11325622-tr707-crash-cymbal-241376.mp3 11325622-tr707-crash-cymbal-241376.webmYields (hosted on lemmy.today’s img-rs):
The situation may be different for PieFed and for Mbin, and note that not all clients may be able to handle WebM, though the Lemmy Web UI is fine with it.
I can’t hear shitSilly me I had the volume all the way down
Did you unmute it?
No at first, I tried to edit before anyone notice but I wasn’t fast enough
Happens to the best of us.
Sounds like a job for funkwhale
That site appears to be down.
Typing funkwhale instance list on duck duck go the first four pages are tutorials for how to self host and documentation, only one link to something with a list.
That’s weird. All their stuff appears to be down. Mastodon, Git, Website, the main instance open.audio.
FediDB list a couple instances though, if you want to try it.
Edit: All their services are back up.
The real question is can I post wavpack? I went out and voted as well.
