I wonder how Q would fare against Gabriel from Supernatural. Their upper bounds are both mostly undefined, so I guess roughly evenly matched?

Q pretty much only helped humanity.

Yeah, he’s chaotic, but introducing Picard to the Borg before the Borg showed up and steamrolled them was a massive gift.

Even the earlier trial of humanity and temptation of Riker served to strengthen their resolve and principles so they didn’t go all Sisko everywhere when the Borg arrived.

I hope Picard and the federation eventually looked back on Q as the gift that he was.

My head canon is that it only seemed chaotic to us, as we do not have an awareness that can perceive anything but the present, or a few dimensions. Q has perception we do not. And Q didn’t really try very hard to explain his actions to us.

He could still be an asshole, but we don’t really have the reference point to make an informed decision on that.

It was always a mixed blessing. For instance, with the Borg, while it did forewarn them, it also brought them into contact much earlier than they would have naturally.

The Borg were only 2 years away from a star base at Enterprise’s maximum warp. We know they can go faster, and that they used warp conduits.

We can probably say within 2-5 years the Borg would have found almost all Alpha quadrant major powers, and likely would have overwhelmed at least some of them.

Voyager established Borg presence in the Alpha quadrant decades before Q who, at least, and Enterprise had them on Earth centuries ago.

Wasn’t the start of that episode the enterprise trying to ascertain why some outlying colonies had gone dark? The borg were just studying the federation at that point; if they’d had more time they could have become even more dangerous

Worf’s lines go hard. My second favorite is (upon hearing his ship’s computer declare an imminent warp core breach during a battle with the Borg), “It is a fine day to die. Set engines to ramming speed!”

For some reason the TNG and VOY writers decided to make Q evil-ish in the late TNG years. What is a complete change of character, because he is clearly a fan of humanity on his first appearances.

They got old, started creaking and found the taste bitter. It’s personal experience leeching into their characters and their stories. And I’d say the writers themselves, knowingly or not, lost that feeling over time.

The problem isn’t whether you can deal with them, it’s all the other voters/backers/supporters/fellow-tricksters.
