After reading this news story that half of Americans are skipping meals because of affordability and a bad economy, I have to ask how are you all doing out there?

I heard from a real estate agent friend of mine that REOs, i.e. bank foreclosures on home mortgages, are going up like crazy, which is a sign of bad times, like the recession of 2007-08.

I have heard from others about rents not being paid, lack of jobs, etc.

Every day, there’s more news of corporate layoffs, moreso than usual.

I live in the economic bubble of the SF Bay Area, where tech wealth more-or-less insulates me and mine from the most serious consequences of a bad economy, but how are things elsewhere?

Of course lemmy downvotes an honest answer to an honest question. Y’all know that every square inch of the planet isn’t suffering, right?!

I find it hilarious a lot of people here talk about eating out of cans and clipping coupons, but then if you ask them their income it’s well over six figures, and yet the are ‘struggling’ economically… despite owning a home, having a fat 401K etc, and yet the are eating rice and beans everyday.

People’s perceptions of their own self declared poverty are hilarious to me. But a sad reality of human psychology. And they are mostly angry about prices of luxury goods like gaming PCs, but have no real perception of understanding of broader economic reality affecting other folks than themselves.

I’ve met quite a few people like this in IRL too. Always the FIRE types who have that mix/max obsessive type of mentality that is deeply detached from any objective measure of economic reality due to their own delusional percpetions of wealth, or a lack thereof.

Well said! I was saying on Bluesky that an extra $20 bucks to fill my tank wouldn’t have registered back when I was making $80K. Lady told me she made better than double that and that extra $20 was a BIG deal for her. 🙄 I can’t imagine feeling that way when my needs are well taken care of. Now that $20 is a thing to me, but it wasn’t then.
