  • For years I kept dating and being in relationships and putting a lot of effort into it. Also socializing and making friends too.

I gave up about 5 years ago and I’m much much happier with my life. It’s amazing how much better I feel on a daily basis when my energy and efforts aren’t going into a black hole from which no joy comes out. I also rapidly achieved a lot of life goals after 10+ years of achieving almost none of them.

Being mostly totally alone is completely awesome and I’m annoyed that other people convinced me it was terrible and awful.

  • Not literally, but metaphorically, yes. People where I live think a 150K salary is poverty and that you can’t possibly have a decent life if you don’t own a Porsche and have three homes. and they talk about it all the time, you can’t sit in restaurant or anywhere without people talking about how their life is awful and depressing because they only have 200K in their checking account and they can’t possible feel safe and secure unless it’s 2 million. And they love to talk about how their parents are horrible to them for not giving them six to seven figure sums in gifts.

  • nah i am also pretty much a bernie type, but on lemmy that means you hate trans people. many folks on here are just looking to be offended by anyone who doesn’t agree with whatever insane belief they have they think makes them special and smarter than other folks, even if it’s totally delusional and dumb.

the good news is the nutbags mostly live on a few instances and if you block them then you don’t have to see their insanity. you will still get some of it, but you won’t get blasted about how you hate trans people when you point out 99% of the population isn’t trans or that catering to the trans extremists who think male/female is a ‘social construction’ that doesn’t exist. I have had weirdos on here literally argue with me that the fact hermaphroditic worms exist means human beings are ‘naturally hermaphroditic’. then when asked if we should reproduce asexually like bacteria they lost it on me and started telling me how I am just a hateful bigot.

  • Right, because I’m not panicking and filling my bathtub with water tonight, I’m the one who is a immature child. Clearly if I was a mature adult I’d have a 3 months supply of survival rations for the inevitable collapse of society, because that’s what responsible mature people do!

It’s not that preppers are stupid and delusional people, whose beliefs are mostly driven by their egotism that they are someone going to survive the end of the world.

  • Yeah, it’s me. I’m not interested in the shit they are interested in, and I don’t empathize with their self-inflected misery that makes up the bulk of their conversational topics.

I’d rather stay home and read a book than listen to someone whine about how their dad is mean to them for not buying them a Porsche, and be told I’m an asshole because I don’t agree that their dad is an asshole and I think they don’t need a Porsche. Plenty of other people though, are happy to have that conversation with them and agree with them their dad is an abusive jerk for not buying them that Porsche. Maybe you are one of those people? maybe you also feel equally aggrieved at your parents or life in general because you don’t have a Porsche? I can’t relate to that, and frankly I think people who feel angry their dad for not buying them a Porsche are shitty people

  • Trying to gain a sense of control about things you can’t control is what stupid people do.

You realize governments push new and updated info campaigns all the time right? They just don’t trend on social media typically.

But hey, if it makes YOU feel special that there is going to be a major disaster next week, feel free to think that Just like the people who prepped and freaked out about the end of the world on Dec 21, 2012. Last time I checked the world didn’t end on that date… but clearly I’m living in a computer simulation so what do I really know!

  • I find it hilarious a lot of people here talk about eating out of cans and clipping coupons, but then if you ask them their income it’s well over six figures, and yet the are ‘struggling’ economically… despite owning a home, having a fat 401K etc, and yet the are eating rice and beans everyday.

People’s perceptions of their own self declared poverty are hilarious to me. But a sad reality of human psychology. And they are mostly angry about prices of luxury goods like gaming PCs, but have no real perception of understanding of broader economic reality affecting other folks than themselves.

I’ve met quite a few people like this in IRL too. Always the FIRE types who have that mix/max obsessive type of mentality that is deeply detached from any objective measure of economic reality due to their own delusional percpetions of wealth, or a lack thereof.

  • Yep. Most folks are like this.

I think a lot of lemmy users vastly project themselves as normative, when they are not. I do a lot of things that most people freak out when they find out because it’s so far outside of their comfort zone. I’ve studied 6 languages, for example. I think it’s fun, most normal folks took high school Spanish and think studying a language is stupid and boring.

They also often become hostile over this difference. People generally hate academics and eggheads, because they perceive their expertise and passion as stupid because it has no immediate benefit or interest to them, and their impulse is always ‘if you are so smart why aren’t you using that intelligence and passion to make more money’.
