Yeah, to be honest I’m not sure I should have gotten a new dog. I’m certainly not going to give her back to the shelter and it has only been a couple of months so maybe things will change over time, but we don’t have a bond the way I had with my old dog from day one. Some of that is because she has a different personality, and some might be because I’m just not as open to bonding.

Mine took a year to bond. That said if you own multiple dogs over a lifetime there while always be that one that was special.

We had two dogs, one old that passed from old age and one young that died suddenly to tetanus of all things. Both bonded with my wife, they adored her. They were GSDs who didn’t like too much touch but would lay on her.

We got a couple dogs afterward and neither of them have bonded with her. They like her and love her as part of the pack but it’s not the same. They’ll never go back as they’re “my” dogs now but it hurts to see

Yeah, in just a couple months the dog might not even have started showing their “normal” behaviour yet. Sometimes it takes a looong time before they get truly comfortable with the new environment, even if they seem to be doing just fine, and that naturally can affect the relationship they have with the owners. All relationships are different, and that applies to relationships with dogs too… Living together, and you both growing to learn each other’s personalities and all, will likely change things over time.

If you felt, you do not like the dog at all, then giving up is a good thing, though, no matter what some people say. All dogs deserve a home where they are loved, and sometimes finding a better place for them, is the greatest act of love you can give.

I like the dog, but I feel sort of how I felt about my sister’s dog when I took care of him for a couple of months while my sister traveled. I enjoyed having him around and we had fun together, but the thought of giving him back to my sister didn’t upset me and I wasn’t sad after I did. If somehow it turns out that my new dog ran away from a loving family and they found out that I had her, I don’t think it would be difficult for me to give her back to them.
