There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

  • Not to start it. For that you just need a lever. Handle of a fork or spoon works. Once it’s punctured you can use your finger, carefully and slowly. Some people aren’t good at that though, so use your best judgement. You can always use the same level to continue pushing it inwards.

So much better than the old pull tabs. They could be dangerous when they did work, they were a safety hazard if not disposed of, and a tab on those that came out? Now you have a problem, that was not an easy fix.

  • I spent some time on the VA’s phone lines while caring for my dad, and kind of grew to like Opus No. 1. There are far worse default options out there. More importantly, I prefer the necessary interruption to let me know I’m still on hold and they’re going to come back to me not be every 20 seconds, and not be at a volume twice as loud as everything else.

I really hate nothing at all. I’ve been hung up on before and didn’t realize it for a minute until I looked at my phone. Why don’t smartphones have that old disconnect sound that landlines would do? Maybe some do.

Also not a fan of the piped in radio music that apparently is being picked up under a bridge, so it’s a faded volume and keeps going in and out. Usually the music isn’t bad, but can we tune it in better?

  • Because people once in a while get together enough to make this happen, then ignore politics for two years. We have a representative government, but we can’t assume they are doing their job well without checking on them from time to time and reminding them why they’re there.

And part of it isn’t their fault - the House has the same problem many classrooms have, too many kids per teacher to do an effective job with each one of them. So the loudest or the neediest get the attention, and the rest fend for themselves. We’ve got to find a way to reduce how many people each representative actually looks over. This also would more accurately split power in districts.

  • No question made in good faith and ignorant of possible answers is stupid.

The answer to the question posed is simply people have differing opinions on how a downvote in particular should be used. My thought is that it should be for a post that has no relevance in the thread. If I disagree, then I post a comment. An upvote should be used where you think more people should see it, not necessarily if you totally agree with it.

An up or downvote without more engagement just to agree or disagree is lazy, but at least the upvote is serving a little purpose.

  • The simple science is that plants do grow in heavier CO2 environments, sometimes very well. But they grow differently, which is a problem for food plants, because they don’t produce what we want from them as food unless we also add heavy nutrients and water. In a greenhouse environment, this can increase production. In the outside, it’s far more difficult to get good results.

So they aren’t wrong, they just don’t understand the bigger picture. Change one thing, other things change too, not always in the direction you want.
