No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there anyway to use LLMs without supporting the billionaires/data centers but without also entirely upgrading your computer?
2·2 days agoI’ve run local models on my work laptop, whose specs I don’t know by heart, but it is a relatively ordinary laptop given out to software developers at a large company. It wasn’t instant, but it did produce some useful results. Look into ollama.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is "open browsing"? And why is Reddit getting rid of it?
7·4 days agoIf you don’t show what your website has to offer to logged-out users, why would logged-out users ever start to become interested in it and thus becoming logged-in users?
Commercialized social media was a mistake. It’s time for the public to figure out a real solution to how to fund online communication infrastructure; I don’t want a system where users pay for access (because that excludes poor people, most minors, etc.), but clearly making it funded by advertisers isn’t having desirable results either.
I wonder if social media could be run by governments (similar to public television and radio broadcasting), or by ISPs (like they used to run Usenet servers). Federation could mean we don’t have to choose, we can have a mix of these and other concepts.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do people vote just by name recognition on the ballot or do they vote for the issues?
0·9 days agoIt tests whether there really are no stupid questions.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do people vote just by name recognition on the ballot or do they vote for the issues?
0·9 days agobecause it’s impossible to make general statements about how “people” in general vote; each voter has different motivations for voting

0·9 days agoDifferent voters vote differently. This is really testing the limits of the sub IMHO.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Whenever I talk to not terminally online people
1·21 days agoA long time ago (I cannot find it anymore, may have been deleted) I read a “tale from tech support” where a user called tech support and complained “my operating system is missing”. Retelling from memory:
Tech support person tried to walk the user through various steps until the user said “ok, let me just close these documents…”
“Wait, you have open documents? Your operating system is not missing.”
“What? No, it is.”
“If your operating system were missing, you wouldn’t be able to do anything with your computer, you wouldn’t have open documents. If you can do that, you definitely have some operating system. What version of Windows is the computer running?”
“Windows 7.”
“There you have it, that’s your operating system.”
“That’s Windows, not operating system.”

That depends on which language people are posting in. I can assure you that Germans do the same thing in all online spaces written in German, which is a language also spoken by us Austrians as well as most Swiss people, Liechtensteiners and citizens of some other countries too.
