Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Options for folks leaving proton who don’t want to self host?
8·1 day agoI don’t know about Tuta, but if you’re looking for an alternative then Mailbox is awesome. It also takes care of calendar, contacts, drive, basic online office webapps, I think they have a basic video conferencing thing too.
I think Mullvad comes up repeatedly as one of the best VPNs, but you need to look up otherwise since VPNs sell out and enshitify all the time.
My teenage favourites are all still in my library. My wife is still forced to listen to all my music (driver always chooses music).

951·1 day agoSo this is some sort of MRI scanner that has gotten a cross section through the person on the right (except the eyeball) and a surface level photo for the person on the left.
The dick is squashed to severely in the mouth that it must be flacid or a prosthetic or insanely painful. That must be a super strong tongue.
The penis is going into the trachea rather than the oesophagus, which makes this life threatening deep throat… And shouldn’t really be possible.
I hope the person on the right is a man… So I can call this “fake and gay”.
Sounds great, I’ll try it out.
I’ve just uninstalled Super Productivity because all the data was client side and server sync was problematic. I’m always going to use it on the home network. This sounds like what I wanted with time tracking and everything.
Same with removing Affine having recently removed that. Same client side data nonsense. I want everything processed on the server.
Other than this… I’ve been trying to keep up with updating everything with all the vulnerabilities with PHP, Debian Kernel vulnerability, etc.
Oh I also set up Homarr. I didn’t think I needed a dashboard. But this has been amazing.

My kid knows exactly how many he has, which ones there are and in what place/position. If anyone touches any of his things, he knows and there will be hell to pay.
You won’t. Or if I look at it from the more positive side: you’d be very very very lucky to make a friend here.
This platform is based on making anonymous accounts and one off comment interactions. There are hardly any tools for adding people to your familiar group, or prioritise seeing their posts or making a small intimate group… It is hard coded into the platform to have these sorts of interactions. It doesn’t matter that you’ve got intentions of deeper interaction if others don’t. Sometimes people here express an interest in chatting with others. I’ve tried twice making a chat group so people could join and chat. One person did, and even then it is very difficult to keep a chat conversation going and to build any connection like that when you likely have no shared interests or experiences.
I’ve had better luck on Reddit (this was 15 years ago) with looking for the local meetups in my city’s subreddit. It was offputting to meet a bunch of people who just wanted to regurgitate memes IRL, but there would always be a small number of pleasant people to exchange numbers with and carry on hanging out with. But this took effort. Lemmy doesn’t have the numbers to have big enough local groups.
This is all on the backdrop of community and friendship being hard to come by universally. Society is more insular and isolated than ever. Friendships aren’t going to come from the comfort of an armchair at home. I’m keen to make friends as well, but I k ow it’s not going to happen here and I’m going to as many work socials and friends of friends hangouts as possible; and I’m looking for some group or class to join locally as well. I would suggest the same to you.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some life lessons you've learned in your own way?
10·3 days agoMore specifically, life is a rogue-like. You get what you get and have to try to make the most of it. You might beat a very difficult stage and get a shot reward for it and that’s just the luck of the roll. Some will get lucky with a legendary that makes their run very easy. You likely won’t and still need to carry on even if you get an anti-synergy. No one is coming to help, this is for you to do.
More specifically, Binding of Isaac really resonated with me and I think I took away a lot of life lessons.

- Lift the glass and run to the car.
- Drive back home.

2·3 days agoI don’t get it. It this suggesting that a version of slut-shaming is funny? As if someone is in no position to want a good partner when they “give away sex too easily” to “low value men” (who don’t have appropriate furniture)?

Is this free crowdsourcing ideas that are going to be regurgitated into a PCmag article or something?
If you’re up for doing work and going bargain hunting for broken keyboards to salvage parts from then you could make a macro-pad(there are other designs besides 4x4, but I like this one). Instantly gives way way more than $25 value with minimal spending.
I like making keyboards otherwise, and you can get a nice set of keycap under your price limit if you’re willing to buy from Aliexpress. Or maybe a couple of artisan keycaps.
You can get magsafe attachments for a phone or tablet. You can get a wallet or kickstand attachment. Phone cases can be decent gifts too.
I buy all my electronics secondhand now and there’s great value to be had. If you’re ok with gifting used things in excellent condition, then I recently got a couple of top tier game controllers for a bit more than your budget (Flydigi Vader 4 Pro for £26 and a Gamesir Cyclone 2 for £28). Also needed an extra set of speakers for my garage gym and got a secondhand Logitech x230 speaker 2.1 system for £22 and it punches way above its weight.
Depends on what your friends are interested in. I would be very happy with a gift of a gigabit switch.
USB C chargers are always handy, and you can get a branded 65W PD laptop charger within your budget on eBay.
If they have a Steam Deck or something then there are plenty of accessories (holders, stands, cases, etc).
Remote with keyboard and wand mouse would be pretty cheap.
Chinese mice from AliExpress are now top tier. Or could get a cheap trackball if preferred.
A FLIRC USB dongle is $25 and makes your TV IR remote work with your media PC.
