  • I’m not from the US.My whole fucking point is that a SINGLE country, no matter how influential it is, switching to a slightly less fascistic leadership is nowhere near “huzzah we saved the world” level change, and thinking so highly of yourself (in this case, on the level of a whole nation) is absolutely narcissistic.

Besides, we’ve seen what the Dems really do 99% of the time, especially without a charismatic leader who brings cohesion. Aside from a select few new faces, most of the old guard will now just sit back and do nothing. I mean, Hakeem Jefferies already announced they won’t seek “to get even” (meaning they won’t even try to prosecute obvious criminal activities in the government), nor will they attempt to impeach Trump…

  • As long as there’s a valid reason (no, “for fun” isn’t a valid reason), hunting with a gun is acceptable.

My dad used to take me to shoot wild ducks near my hometown. It was a sort of artificial “wilderness” - used to be open fields and sandy dunes that got transformed into a forest (partly for wood, partly to bind the soil so a canal could be cut to provide water). With that forest and canal came a bunch of animals finding new home. Except… any predator was basically already driven out of the area centuries before. Leading to the mostly waterfowl population getting out of control.

So we’d go a few times a year and shoot a bunch of ducks and geese. On average we’d take home 15-20 birds. My mum “loved” it, because she got to de-feather them by hand, butcher and process (though I did help with that), and about half the meat would be handed out to neighbours and friends. On the bright side of things we’d eat like kings for a week or two. Wild duck liver, roasted with some bacon, and of course duck breast rosè 🤤

Nothing would go to waste, the wandering Romani pillowmakers would buy the feathers, all the innards would be either used in a meal or made into sausages (yes, including the feet and head), the roast bones would be good for a stock base, and our neighbour was always happy to take any leftover bones to grind up and give it to his dog or use it in his garden.

For a long time I thought it was a fun activity for us to do together, and only recently asked why he never took my younger brothers… turns out he got his licence for population control, had to report any bird he took out, and thanks to climate change, the canal became useless around the time my older younger brother was the age my dad would’ve taken him for such a trip, and because of no canal = no birds = no need to control the population.

  • It’s almost like humans have evolved next to every other animal on this planet, and it’s almost like… mammals share certain aspects of how they experience life. Including liking/disliking/hating certain people/animals.

Humans love to anthropomorphise animals when they do human-like things or express certain emotions. And most likely said animals do feel something related to those emotions, because after all, their experience of this mortal coil isn’t that different from ours. What they seem to lack is the understanding of those emotions, at least on a human-like conscious level.

In reality, we shouldn’t be anthropomorphise animals, but realise that 90% of the things we do, animals do too, it’s just that we have a conscious understanding of those things that animals lack. Or, sometimes, it’s the other way around. I mean I don’t see penguins or donkeys or bulls being homophobic and trying to kill other animals just because they happen to be attracted to the same sex, for example.

  • Hungary didn’t start celebrating Halloween until the early 2000s

    Okay, that’s not exactly correct.

Hungary has celebrated All-Saints Day (or All Souls’ Day) for most of modern history, it being one of the more central Christian holidays. And like most Eastern Christian countries, that and the day of the dead (1st and 2nd of November) kind of blended together, so for us it’s a day or two of remembrance of loved ones who passed on.

Halloween (All Hallow’s Evening) is an invention of the Anglosphere, and is much more recent than the aforementioned Hungarian tradition, appearing around 1840, formed from the various Celtic myths and traditions mixing with Catholic events, much like Christmas. It isn’t Hungary that “doesn’t celebrate Halloween”, but in reality, most of the world doesn’t.

With that said… Hungary is mostly Roman Catholic and Protestant. The Anglican branch doesn’t have much foothold, and most of the aforementioned two groups don’t really consider them to be “true Christians” (and with that I can already see the “no true Scotsman” debate forming in the follow-up comments…).

Because of this, a lot of the Anglosphere influenced/created, religious-ish things are looked down upon in Hungary, to the point where “There’s no halloween in Hungary” has become a meme for the past ~15 years or so.

And while that is the general mentality, Hungarians have been aware of the tradition in popular knowledge since around the 1980s - some telenovelas even incorporated it as a “trendy new thing the young ones are doing”. In reality, in the 80s and 90s, very few would have a halloween party, mostly university/college students who tried to adopt western behaviours as a rebellion against the USSR’s enforced conformity.

The early 2000s brought on a new generation of children who’ve never experienced said Soviet oppression, who’ve had access to the internet, and of course the onslaught of Western media popularising the holiday. But, again, it’s still a very “posh” thing to do, so it’s mostly Budapest’s more affluential, suburban areas that participate in it.
