I say with the utmost respect.

“You’re dead. This is the afterlife. <smarmy smirk> and I’m god.”

Picard was annoyed as a captain that had an orderly ship to maintain. But as an explorer and scientist Q was always interesting

If Q were the more mellow version from Picard Season 2 he’d be less annoyed, true. But prankster Q would always annoy him.

I want to like Picard best, by which I mean: I think Picard was the best and most moral captain*, but I’m not from a post scarcity society, and I’m still a little rough around the edges. I like sisko better, because he’s not constantly gracious, he gets mad, he allows a little terrorism as a treat, and he can live with it, he can live with it.

He did almost gas that world though…

      • watching Picard just continuously make the right choice actively influenced my own ethical decision making process, and I’ll always be grateful to have an internal Jean-Luc. I hope one day I’ll live in a world where I can only channel him and not sisko.

I thought he did gas that world, it’s been a few years though.

I like Sisko too, he had to deal with problems we never saw Picard really struggle against. I personally find Picard my favourite.

          Absolutely a valid choice :)

Now that you say that, he might have gassed it as the final move in a game of chicken and it was just a twist of moral luck that saved him from genociding a planet.

While I agree Jean-Luc is the model of what a Starfleet captain should be, without Kirk’s antics we would’ve never seen Roddenberry’s vision for what a stand-up captain should be.

They each were great for their time. Kirk was a brash explorer in a fresh, untaimed galaxy. Picard was perfect for the time where the federation was established, where you needed politics and compromise - before the dangers of the Borg, before the Dominion, before the Marquis. He actually had the the chance to explore a more peacefull galaxy, without so many constant threats.

Picard was a real man of science first, and he, as, Stewart, were perfect for that time in Star Trek and in our world in the 90s.

Sadly, neither the Federation nor we won’t see a peaceful time like that, I fear. I wish, we could have that again.
