The offside rule while touted as being stupidly complex and silly is actually as simple as “you can’t receive a pass of the ball in the opponents’ side if there are no defenders between you and the goal, excluding the keeper”
It stops players camping the goal area waiting for a pass.
Ah yes. The famous baseball rule. Yes I know this one.
No you’re thinking of the Infield offside rule.
No no that’s for tennis
Ha! Tell that to Bobby Fisher.
I’m happy to have learned via this series of tubes that I’m not so alone in my blissful ignorance of sportsball.
I was raised without religion and without sports, I was not explicitly denied these things, simply not provided them in my family. For that, I will always be thankful to my parents.
My god, the times I’ve been shunned for not following any sport. I mean, curling, darts, and bowling fans get more respect.
My knowledge of Star Trek vs my knowledge of local politics.
Star Trek Trivia: Captain Sisko and Captain Archer are both sports fans, Sisko loves baseball because Avery Brooks does in real life and Archer loves Water polo because Scott Bakula does.
Sportsball Trivia: NBA Hall of famer James Worthy played a very tall Klingon in an episode of TNG.
Star Trek Sportsball trivia: The expensive futuristic racquetball set designed for O’Brien and Bashir to compete in was reportedly so difficult to actually play on that they gave up and had them compete at darts instead.

My left middle finger is slightly longer than my right. This may be useless random information right now, but if I ever become famous it will turn into Trivia - which could take long enough to make it Vintage Trivia. So just to be safe, write it down.
The food industry currently pushing to get people addicted to chips, decided the food pyramid, and people believed them straight up.
Benzodiaphine abusers have been known to see something known as the Hat man. If he gets you, you forget your dream.
I dunno sportsball.
Trivia: Shari Lewis wrote a TOS Episode: The Lights of Zetar.
This Shari Lewis:

So we have her to thank for this nightmare:

which one? the shari lewis playing shari lewis or the shari lewis being played by shari lewis?
That blew my mind. I need to watch that episode again.
To be fair to her, that’s a character shari Lewis played on a children’s program who happened to also be called shari lewis
She also liked going to restaurants and making sure people knew it was her.
Then she’d order lamb chops.
Cool, I like her even more now.
I watched her with Lamb Chop in reruns in the 70s. I suppose on Saturday mornings, or after school.
The infield fly rule while seemingly incongruous exists to prevent players from deliberately failing to secure an easy out in order to force their opponent into an almost certain double play (2 outs)
When a ball is hit into the air in play in the infield with 0 or 1 out already recorded and a player on first base, the umpires will call the infield fly rule immediately, the play becomes dead and the player who hit the ball is considered to be out

HUH, YEAH
WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR

It is interesting how the spirit of the rules of the game really only award optimal play (like with a fielder’s choice). I never really understood the infield fly rule til your explanation, so thanks for that!
You are most welcome
OK, let’s see if I got it.
I pop a fly ball high so it lands in the infield, where someone will probably catch it. Meanwhile the runners get onto two bases. On the next batter I can go for the kill and get 3 outs.
I know damned well I messed that up.
You did but that’s ok. It’s actually more like this, you pop it up and there is already another player on first base (a super critical point I completely omitted)
If there were not an infield fly rule, I as the defending team would let the easy pop fly catch drop, failing to secure the out.
This forces the player on first to run for second, and the batter to run to first.
I pick up the ball in front of me and throw to 2nd for a force out, then to first for a second force out aka a double play.
The opportunity for the double play shouldn’t exist because I should have caught the batter out
Ah thanks. I’ve always wondered why they had that rule.
I never thought I would get it! I knew it had something to do with getting more runners on base and screwing them, but I don’t know enough about baseball to work it out.
Woooooo, I did something useful today
Close. You pop the ball high into a nimbus so that it lands in an airfield, where a pilot will grab it off the runway. Meanwhile one of two snipers in the ATC tower captures the flag for the other base, and sneaks in a kill on the pilot, unless he drops 3 bags of luggage first
The large book in the ready room in TNG is The Globe Illustrated Shakespeare, open to pages 354-355. Visible on the page in three episodes is a photograph of Patrick Stewart performing in As You Like It in 1968. This means the real-life Patrick Stewart and his Shakespearean acting career are part of the fictional Star Trek universe.
I, too, saw the thread from yesterday!
All hew-mons look alike, Nog.
That’s so cool.

I don’t know why, but it only makes sense that this is Randy Johnson. It couldn’t have happened otherwise
I may not follow sports but I listen to no such thing as a fish
James Doohan who plays Scott in the original series was shot 6 times on D-Day by friendly fire AFTER surviving the initial attack.
4 shots hit his leg, one blew off his finger and one bullet struck him in the chest, which was stopped from being fatal by a silver cigarette case in his pocket

Deep Space Nine co-creator and co-executive producer Michael Piller was an avid baseball aficionado who amassed tens of thousands of baseball trading cards in his lifetime. His mother, songwriter Ruth Roberts, created the “It’s a Beautiful Day for a Ball Game” theme song for the Los Angeles Dodgers and “Meet the Mets” for the New York Mets.
Sportsball? Like in that episode of Star Trek?

The Patriots and Steelers are the football teams that have the most superbowl wins with 6 wins each.
Tom Brady has 7 superbowl wins.
